Enjoy Doing Time ; Leafy Shooters Hill has New Homes in an Historic Building As the Old Police Station Gets a Makeover, Says David Spittles

Summary

HOOTERS Hill in south-east London rises steeply from Blackheath and is one of the capital's highest points, with views over to the towering skyscrapers of Canary Wharf. Competing for attention with a Victorian Gothic water tower -- a distinctive landmark at the summit of the hill -- is an 1840s police station, one of London's oldest, built on the site of a gallows where highwaymen used to be hanged in the days when Shooters Hill was part of the main route for horse- drawn mail carriages running between London and Dover.

Today, the area is a leafy, somewhat cut-off suburban backwater, surrounded by open space such as Oxleas Wood and Woolwich Common. But there are signs of new life on the old execution site. The listed police station, which closed in 1999, has been redeveloped into 31 apartments and four houses.
