ENTERTAINMENT in London is about to go through a purple patch. The giant upturned purple cow that you may have noticed on London's South Bank is remarkable not only in and of itself. From today until the middle of July it will host some of the most innovative, inventive comedy shows you'll see in the capital this summer.

The 406-seat blow-up Udderbelly theatre is based at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival every August but before it heads north the organisers have programmed a season that brings the Fringe spirit south, mixing pure stand-up with improvisation, satire, circus, music, magic, theatre and more. From children's singalongs to the wilder excesses of the burlesque boom and some of the most exciting new trends in comedy, 49 different shows in just over seven weeks offer something for everyone.
