CARLSBERG and Heineken upped the stakes in their joint bid for Scottish Newcastle today, but will have to go further to win the backing of the UK brewing group's board.

The European lager giants surprised SN last month with a 720p-a- share offer it quickly dismissed as "derisory". Today they came back with a 750p bid, still well short of the 800p analysts believe is needed to get SN to the table.
