Killer Roads

Summary

IN recent years, the number of speed cameras has gone up, but, as we report today, there are still almost 1,000 accident blackspots in London eligible for speed cameras which do not have them.

To qualify for funding for a speed camera, any given site has to have had at least three accidents over the previous three years in which a driver, pedestrian or cyclist has been killed or badly injured. There are 956 such sites across the capital. And while speed cameras may be unpopular, the evidence is that they do save lives. Between 2000 and 2005, the number of people killed or seriously injured in London fell by almost 3,000 - nearly half - largely thanks to Pounds 158 million-worth of Transport for London safety projects and more cameras. Yet the Department of Transport does not have enough money to fund cameras in these new blackspots.
