TROOPS and police in the Philippines were searching today for the armed kidnappers of a 78-year-old Irish missionary who is suffering from a heart condition.

The Reverend Michael Sinnott was snatched by six men from the garden of his missionary compound in Pagadian city, Zamboanga del Sur province, last night. The kidnappers are suspected to be Muslim rebels fighting for a separate homeland in the predominantly Catholic nation's volatile south.
