ED HARRIS POLICE in Kenya today claimed they had been ordered to shoot to kill to quell the violence that broke out after President Mwai Kibaki was controversially re-elected.

The death toll was rising after three days of rioting across the country, which came amid allegations that Mr Kibaki had stolen his re-election with fraud and vote rigging. Protesters armed with machetes and sticks fought running battles with police on the streets of several towns and cities.
