FOR MANY years mystery has surrounded the identity of the author of a blistering attack on Tony Blair, published in the Left-wing paper Tribune in 1996, two years after he became Labour Leader and a year before he was elected Prime Minister. Now I can reveal it was none other than Ken Livingstone, then Labour MP for Brent East.

"He is unaware of just how widespread is the dissatisfaction and outright anger at the style of his leadership and policies among those MPs who put him in the leadership," said the article under the byline Cassandra, said to be a senior Labour MP. "Starting with the anger over choice of school for his son and running up to the expensive irrelevance of the Road to the Manifesto, I have never known Labour MPs to be so bitterly and personally critical of their leader." At the time Labour MPs Austin Mitchell, Tony Banks, Paul Flynn, Brian Sedgemore, Denzil Davies and John Garrett were among those blamed for this scurrilous attack.
