IT'S ALL David Blunkett's fault. Jacqui Smith stands accused of swindling the taxpayer out of thousands of pounds by choosing to lodge at her sister's house in south London and telling the Commons authorities that the property is her 'main' home.

Smith has not broken any rules, but why does she think she can be so choosy about where she lives, burdening the public purse in the process? On taking up her cabinet post in 2007, she was apparently offered a rent-free house in South Eaton Place, the traditional dwelling of the Home Secretary since the 1980s. Smith supposedly vetoed this option. The thought of it being David Blunkett's former love nest, where he conducted his fling with Kimberly Fortier, may have figured in her calculations.
