Israel's Right to Defend Itself

Summary

THE DEEPENING crisis in Lebanon is rapidly dividing British public opinion. The weekend saw demonstrations in London both for and against Israel. But while the destruction in Haifa caused by Hezbollah rockets is terrible, increasing numbers of Britons are even more dismayed by the scale of suffering in Lebanon. Even those who support Israel's right to defend itself have been shocked by the bombing of Beirut, while the UN has condemned Israel's tactics.

But it is still important to remember the immediate cause of this crisis: Hezbollah's continued aggression against Israel, of which its capture of two Israeli soldiers was only the latest example. Nor is Hezbollah alone among Israel's enemies in creating this situation. The group has always been funded and armed in significant part by Iran, which has used this latest crisis to divert attention from its nuclear programme. Hezbollah now describes itself as part of an Islamist cause stretching from Iran to Palestine: it is not realistic to expect Israel to accept this.
