AT LEAST eight peoplewere killed when a tsunami swept ashore in the Solomon Islands today, demolishing villages and triggering panic across the region.

Officials fear the death toll could rise after the 16ft wave, triggered by a strong undersea earthquake in the South Pacific, struck 215 miles north-west of the Solomon Islands' capital Honiara at a depth of six miles below the surface.
