Is the Foodspy

Summary

Following revelations last month that John Prescott likes baked beans with everything, Food Spy hears that the DPM has asked his officials to recruit a top London chef to help advise on his diet. 'His people have been talking to restaurant PRs whose chefs might be able to assist,' Food Spy's Whitehall mole reveals. 'But sadly there doesn't seem to be a chef in London who will help.' Friends of restaurateur Tom Conran expressed disappointment at the opening last week of his new restaurant Crazy Homies in Westbourne Grove. 'It used to be the shady shebeen where gangsters, celebs and the likes of Christine Keeler hung out in the Sixties,' says one. 'But Tom's revamp is respectable, I saw no gangsters and was unable to procure a single high-class tart all night.' Restaurant bites Food Spy hears of Ranald Macdonald's latest scheme to avoid a smoking ban at his Belgravia restaurant Boisdale. 'You can smoke in prisons, care homes or hotel bedrooms,' explains a colleague.

'While some of our customers should be in care homes and others have done time, we reckon that if we place a bed in one corner and charge guests a fee, they can smoke.' Regulars of the Berkeley Square Cafe's latest incarnation as The Berkeley Square Restaurant Bar have their campaign to stop the new owners playing music instead of talking books in the loos. 'Listening to Animal Farm halfway through lunch is so refreshing,' one diner says.
