.THE first volunteers for redundancy on Rupert Murdochs Wapping papers are expected to leave as early as this weekend. There was surprise in some quarters about the extent of the cuts, announced last week. More than 100 jobs are going across News International, including 30-plus on The Times alone. Some eyebrows have been raised that veteran Times journalist David Altheer is among those quitting. As father of the Times NUJ chapel and a staff representative, he had been in talks with management over the cuts. Leavers are thought to be getting three weeks pay for each year served, plus notice, and no cap.
