Northern Ireland's Viridian is taken over by Islamic bank AN Islamic bank has taken over the power supply in the famously sectarian province of Northern Ireland. Bahrain-based Arcapita Bank, formerly known as First Islamic Investment Bank, is to buy Viridian, which trades as Northern Ireland Electricity, in a deal worth Pounds 1.6 billion. Arcapita, which two years ago bought South Staffordshire Water and also co-owns with npower 19 UK wind farms, is paying 1336p a share for Viridian - a 36% premium to where the shares were on Wednesday.

He said he had received unsolicited offers but none had been accepted.
