BRACE yourselves. We'll be hearing a lot about Scotland over the next few months. In this, its 300th anniversary year, the Union is looking more strained than a Gordon Brown smile. Our first Scots prime minister for 43 years - able to impose health and education policies on us, but not on his own constituents - will increase English muttering about Britain's lopsided devolution.

The Scottish elections in May/June could, for the first time, be won by a party committed to Scottish independence. Serious people are talking about schism, break-up and the dread possibility that The Krankies may no longer be able to travel south.
