IAIN DUNCAN Smith might have been vindicated by the Betsygate saga but there is mounting pressure on him to reveal his mystery backers for his legal defence. IDS employed solicitor and libel specialist David Hooper in addition to a barrister. His legal fees are believed to be in excess of Pounds 300,000 .

IDS is understood to have been paid the legal costs through donations from some of his wealthier friends, most notably Old Etonian millionaire Greville Howard upon whom the former Tory Leader conferred a peerage. If so, parliamentary convention dictates IDS should provide details of any donations in the next Register of Members' Interests out later this month.
