ABOUT 1000 staff at HSBC today staged a one-day strike over pay as the bank's chairman, Sir John Bond, described the dispute as "deeply regrettable", writes Jane Padgham.

Carrying red flags and handing out peanuts to reflect what they say is "derisory" pay, more than 100 HSBC workers chanted loudly as shareholders arrived for the bank's annual meeting at the Barbican. Banners branded HSBC "the world's stingiest bank".
