Cyprus is, according to myth, the place where Aphrodite was born, emerging from the briny foam a fully formed vision of female perfection. I was hoping that the island's waters could perform a similar miracle on me. I was certainly staying in the right place to attempt a goddess-like makeover. The Aphrodite Hills complex overlooks the beach where the deity took her first steps, and legend has it that if you strip naked and swim 20 times round the great rock that abuts it, as the sun sinks into the sea, you will look 20 years younger. Thankfully, there was a less strenuous way to take off the years, as it was a mere five-minute walk from my grand bedroom to the luxury, classically inspired hotel spa.
