IT does seem strange that in these modern times of spectacularly successful forensic science coups, highly detailed digital surveillance and vast databases of criminal information and modus operandi, that a simple hoax-letter writer can, seemingly, get away with it.
This letter, of course, is the Manawatu-posted note that sent the entire country's economy into a flap back in May. The letter, which claimed that foot and mouth disease had been let loose among Waiheke Island's animals and more attacks would happen unless certain actions were taken, was sent to Prime Minister Helen Clark's office on May 9. Rather bizarrely it included a demand for a flat tax rate to be imposed on the country.See the full content of this document
