HERE'S a financial product you may not have known about before the advent of swine fever. The Extreme Mortality Bond. This dark little creature is a bond that securitises insurance companies' exposure to a sharp rise in death rates. For the insurance company, it is essentially a form of reinsurance but, for investors trading the things, it allows you to speculate on the chances of a devastating pandemic sweeping across the developed world and killing your friends and family. So far, the market price has not shifted much, as the bonds cover only the US, Britain, Canada, France, Germany and Japan. For a typical mortality catastrophe bond to pay out, more than 10 million people have to die.
