PRINCE WILLIAM cut a colourful figure this week in the velvet mantle and ostrich-plumed cap of the Order of the Garter. As the thousandth member of England's highest order of chivalry, he has joined the most select club of all and one that includes some of the great names in world history.
Mystery surrounds the origins of the Order of the Garter, although it was probably founded in 1348 by the warlike Edward III. One legend holds that he was dancing with the Countess of Salisbury when her garter slipped from her leg. When his courtiers burst into laughter, the chivalrous King picked up the garter and tied it to his own leg, telling them: "Honi soit qui mal y pense" ("Shame on him who evil thinks"), the motto of his new Order.See the full content of this document
