IF THE new EU food-labelling regulations, due to be published this year, are implemented across the board they will give a huge advantage to the big producers who have the resources to comply (31 August).
Small, artisan producers who make their food products with local and seasonal ingredients that vary from week to week will be hit hardest. Just as more people are seeking out local food, with all its benefits for the local economy and the environment, along comes this ludicrous legislation. Of course consumers want to know what they're eating, but I'm sure most shoppers have more trust in their local farmers' market or the homemade cakes at the school fte than in Brussels bureaucrats forcing rules on small businesses.See the full content of this document
