MUCH has been made of Greg Rusedski's Canadian roots but few British-born players would have clawed their way back up from 166th in the world rankings. Rusedski, who controversially switched allegiance to Great Britain in 1995, was beaten by Pat Rafter in the US Open Final in 1997 but has since been dogged by injury, tested positive for nandrolone before clearing his name last year and plummeted to his world-ranking low last July.

He turns 32 during next month's US Open in New York and the ageist lobby will again urge the British No2 to retire, but his reply will be the usual trademark wide grin and insistence that he is still some way from giving up the game he loves.
