London's leafiness is the magical ingredient in that elusive commodity we call quality of life or "liveability". It is thus the most visible indicator of the state of its environment. So it's curious that it has got hardly a mention during the mayoral election campaign.

Of course Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens are probably safe enough. But the same cannot be said for much of the rest of the capital's environment. Unless we act now, in 10 or 20 years' time London will be a much less liveable place.

Indeed, many of us will have voted with our feet - and moved out.
