Casanova Lyric Hammersmith DON'T get excited. This tiresome show might be called Casanova but it has little to do with the philandering Venetian polymath as you know him. For a start, "he" is now "she". Why such ponderous whimsy? Writer Carol Ann Duffy and the team from Told by an Idiot offer no cogent reason, which leaves the project looking like little more than an attention-grabbing gimmick.
In previous work such as The World's Wife, Duffy has rewritten women's roles in male-dominated history. She might well not like the multitudinous constraints that women suffered two and a half centuries ago I don't, either but one flourish of the pen and one sex change cannot banish them as a fact, or as an awareness in audience minds.See the full content of this document
