MY PARENTS loved music and belonged to the local choral society, but they loved The Beatles and pop music, too. The attitude that it's okay to enjoy all sorts of music without feeling ashamed that it's not highbrow rubbed off on me, and it's a belief I still hold passionately.

I was born in Bromley, south London. My dad was a teacher and when I was a baby we moved to Thame, when Dad got a headship at a grammar school that later became a comprehensive.

I had the good fortune to be accepted into the choir at New College, Oxford when I was eight. As it was a chorister school, it meant the fees were waived. Parents such as mine who were teachers, not bankers, were keen to be able to afford this kind of education, so it was a big thing for me and my brothers to get into the choir.
