Summary


THE media loves nothing better than a list and, since 2002, Joe Warwick at Restaurant Magazine has been providing one: the World's 50 Best Restaurants. Coming from a small, faintly renegade publication, it has had astonishing impact, but perhaps lists are seized upon by the media and others in the hope of bringing about order in an increasingly volatile world.

When this list was first composed, the results were heavily biased in favour of the UK, which was not surprising since the jury was made up of mainly British chefs, restaurateurs, restaurant critics and other industry movers and shakers. With so many British, notably London-based, restaurants figuring in the magic top 50, it meant that headlines could be - and were - composed along the lines of "London is the gastronomic capital of the world". As recently as last year, Britain led the field with 14 of the best restaurants including the winner, the Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire.
