STEVEN GERRARD, restored to the centre of midfield in the absence of Frank Lampard, turned in a matchwinning performance for England and then admitted: "The first half was probably one of the most difficult 45 minutes I've played in my career." Gerrard scored two goals for England with Preston's David Nugent, making his senior England debut, netting the third when he helped Jermain Defoe's shot over the line.
