GERMAN film, like German comedy, used to labour under the weight of nationalistic stereotypes. It was all grim epics such as Das Boot, or interminable historical family sagas like Heimat, wasn't it? Well, the likes of Downfall, the Oscar-winning The Lives of Others and even the kinetic Run, Lola, Run changed all that.So there should be an eager audience for the 11th Festival of German Film.

Highlights this year include the opening film, A Year Ago in Winter, a drama of bereavement and family secrets from Academy Awardwinning director Caroline Link, and the closing one, Cloud 9, a study of a sixtysomething love affair by Andreas Dresen. In between, the programme highlights the cultural diversity of German film.
