LONDONERS are paying up to Pounds 1.29 a litre for petrol - almost 40p above the national average. The price was charged by the Total Garage in Sloane Avenue, but elsewhere a Standard investigation found prices varying between 91.9p and 95.5p - all above the national average.

The findings come as the crude oil price has soared to a record high on world markets, bringing the threat of a national average of Pounds 1 a litre for unleaded fuel.
