THE beautifully English market town of Ross-on-Wye provides the perfect weekend escape. Only two-and-a-half hours by car from London, and rich with things to see and places to stay, the Herefordshire town is surrounded with historic gems, including the Palaeolithic Doward Caves, and the magnificent ruins of Goodrich Castle and Tintern Abbey. The town holds weekly markets on each Thursday and Saturday under its fine red-stone market set in the main square, and for the serious lover of interiors, there is Baileys - surely one of the best homeware stores in the country.

When Mark and Sally Bailey bought Whitecross Farm almost two years ago it was a mess of derelict farm buildings. Using an ingenious mix of traditional materials and modern building techniques, the couple have converted it into an impressive homeware department store that combines utilitarian good looks with old- world farm charm.
