NORMAN Lebrecht writes that attendances rose 75 per cent after entrance to our national museums was made free (18 June). Counting visitors when they don't have to pay, however, is erratic.

When the British Library was housed in the British Museum, I might have gone in and out half a dozen times a day and therefore counted as six visitors.
