WITH the recent dramatic drop in temperatures, there is no escaping the need to wrap up well before heading out - even to the most glamorous of do's. This week, smart people will rush to the shops for winter accessories and coats before all the choice ones go.

Sheepskin, or shearling, is one of the warmest of fabrics and, unlike fur, is widely acceptable. It is a by-product, made from the skin of a sheep with the fleece left on, and the really soft sumptuous kind is taken from new-born lambs. Harvey Nichols, which has a strict no-fur policy, happily stocks sheepskin. "It is a great alternative to fur as it is equally warm, if not warmer, and in fashion terms a much stronger look," says Richard Gray, a spokesman for the fashion store.
