WE HAVE long celebrated the contribution of migrants to our sporting success in the 1930s, Prince Obolensky won four caps as an England rugby player.

But there is a difference between South Africans such as Kevin Pietersen playing cricket for England and a Bulgarian representing Britain in Olympic wrestling. The Victorian inventors of international sporting competition believed in sport for its own sake. Organisations such as the MCC, FA and the RFU developed as private associations promoting the best interests of their sports.
