Restaurant bites On his way to a cookery demo for Waitrose customers in Southend, French chef Jean-Christophe Novelli (below) gets a puncture and calls me for help. 'I tried to take the spare tyre from the boot and I've spilt my ingredients all over the M1,' he wails.

'I've lost all my Granny Smith apples how can I make a tarte Tatin without them? I'll have to use bananas instead.' I daren't point out that if he's on his way to Southend, he probably shouldn't be on the M1.
