WHEN 20,000 Tamils have died in the last onslaught of the civil war, why is the residency of Tamil Tiger strategist Anton Balasingham's widow in the UK a major story? She has not taken a public role in politics since her husband's death in 2006. The Sri Lankan authorities' suggestion she has been key to co-ordinating the protests in London is insulting -- no-one ordered us to go to Parliament Square.

Now the conflict is over, Western countries must rethink their ban on the LTTE. It does not pose a military threat after being wiped out as a fighting force; but it remains a unifying political force among Tamils.
