Once upon a time, projects written and put together by largely British crews, dependent on British stars and financed by British organisations, had to claw their way into the Hollywooddominated multiplex.

Now, thanks to the surprise success of Slumdog, a happy ending looks more possible. The vivid, feelgood, Film4- funded drama swept to Oscars glory and $326 million of box-office receipts on a wave of acclaim which began at the international film festivals.
