I WAS at last in London. Walking along the bank of the River Thames on our way to have lunch at the celebrated River Cafe, with my friend Sal from Auckland, the London Correspondent Rachel, and her friend Emily.

Both Rachel and Emily started together as waitresses at the River Cafe when they first arrived in London.

A Feeling for Food

Suddenly we were there. It is all so deceptively simple, the white walls, the strong blue carpet, the unadorned commercial bank of windows, the uncluttered lines of stainless steel, even the clock on the wall that is not a clock, but a clever shadow.
