THE death from cancer of Simon Channing Williams at the age of 63 robs the British film industry of one of its most popular and capable producers. In a notoriously competitive world, he was a man no one disliked and one whom everyone, even those whose films he gently rejected, admired and respected.

In particular, Mike Leigh owed Channing Williams a huge debt. He often had to raise money in difficult circumstances when there were only the bones of a story with which to convince financiers and no stars in the cast.
