NOBEL laureate Seamus Heaney, "famous Seamus" to his friends, carried off the biennial David Cohen prize for Literature at the British Library last night in front of poet laureate Andrew Motion and writer Dame Beryl Bainbridge. "Many actors turn lifetime achievement awards down because that means they're finished,"said Heaney from the winner's podium.
"I find it hard to say anything but thanks. This is a uniquely honorific award. I didn't even know there was a long list or a short list -- that's nice to know." Judge John Walsh seemed impervious to the fact that he had his suit jacket tucked into the back of his pants while novelist Beryl Bainbridge was heard to cry "f ***" when she heard the prize was worth Pounds 40,000 before necking someone else's champagne.See the full content of this document
