IT IS hard to say what has made the residents of Grosvenor Square happier: the news that the US Embassy is planning to move to Vauxhall or Sir Ian Blair's forced resignation.

The residents are celebrating the lifting of a massive blight from their neighbourhood, as the US Embassy in London has long been acknowledged as probably the number one terrorist target in the world. They sensibly asked that a potential disaster be prevented by the simple closure of Upper Grosvenor St and Upper Brook St to through-traffic. But, although the US Ambassador supported their call, as did the local MP, Ken Livingstone and even Sir John Stevens, the roads remain open and dangerous even today.
