To flee dark, cold, February London for southern Europe, even for three days, seems more and more essential.

The skies in Madrid were pure azure, the air sharp and invigorating, when not polluted by bendy buses in the Gran Via (are Ken's ghastly new buses part of a European conspiracy to pollute us and to squash bicyclists?). It is easy to forget that Madrid is at over 2,000ft, with skiing an hour away in winter.
