Employee Fraud Nears Pounds 1 Billion

WHITE-COLLAR crime soared last year, with the value of reported fraud rising by 30% on a year earlier to just under Pounds 1 billion.

A report today from accountants BDO Stoy Hayward reveals that the value of employee fraud rocketing by more than 80% last year and by 200% over the past two years. In a recent example, hospital manager Joy Henry defrauded Kings College Hospital of almost Pounds 600,000 by creating "ghost" employees, whose salaries she pocketed Other cases involved "procurement fraud", in which employees rigged tenders in return for a bribe or placed orders with businesses in which they had a secret connection.
