SIR ELTON John kissed and made up with Madonna at the GQ Men of the Year Awards. Elton, who was serving as last night's compere at the Royal Opera House, introduced the singer by saying their row was over: "This is a moment you thought you would never see." He added that after his last jibe he had "written a grovelling apology and offered to join the Kabbalah".

Almost a year after a high-speed crash nearly cost him his life, Richard Hammond was named TV Personality of the Year. Elton quipped: "Last time I drove that quickly it was to get away from Boy George." Sir Michael Caine walked off with a Lifetime Achievement Award and Sir Paul McCartney, who was unable to pick up his Man Of The Year Award in 2006, collected his gong last night.
