FORMER Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie's proposed buyout of The Wireless Group took a new twist today with reports that he is lining up 3i - also behind Lord Alli's Pounds 100 million bid for Virgin Radio - as the new backer for his Pounds 100 million bid. MacKenzie would not be drawn on the speculation.

Results out today showed operating profit at TWG, which owns the talkSPORT radio station, rose 54% to Pounds 4.3 million last year.
