1 Beware picnics on the lawn. Grass is the real villain - and is just about to mug us. There are 150 species of grass in Britain, of which about a dozen account for 90 per cent of hayfever allergies. It is possible to be allergic to more than one grass (and tree pollens, too). The grass pollen season starts now and goes through to September.

2 Check the pollen count. See bbc.co.uk/weather/pollen/ for the latest forecast. The second week in June is the worst time for hayfever, according to the National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit (pollenuk.co.uk).

3 Keep an eye out for symptoms in your children. Hayfever tends to arrive in your teens, just at exam time. So watch your children for the classic hayfever symptoms - bunged-up nose, streaming eyes and itchiness in the throat, nose and eyes - and start them on treatments (nasal sprays, eye drops and antihistamines) for a couple of weeks before they sit GCSEs and A-levels.
