DOWNING Street's Christmas tree was lying on its side this morning outside No 10, stripped of baubles and moulting fast - a doleful herald to the Prime Minister's first public appearance of the New Year.

Looking tanned but not exactly relaxed, Tony Blair returned to his first press conference after allegations that he had messed up by failing to be present in the wake of the disaster and with his Chancellor delivering a speech at the same time in Scotland about the need to use our chairmanship of the G8 to save Africa and aid the Asian victims. Meanwhile Mr Blair was keen to talk about exactly the same things.
