The First in a Series On the Capital's Dressing Rooms ; Changing Room Watch

Summary

1 TOPSHOP OXFORD CIRCUS

The grand-daddy of all changing rooms, this vast aircraft hangar where loving relationships are forged between girl and fluorescent legging was fairly quiet on our visit. Which made its tattiness all the more noticeable. Then again, it's hardly Topshop's fault if some of its customers consider it polite to smudge the walls with orange foundation. I tried on six items but was told that one, a leopardprint jacket (don't ask) had to be tried on on the shop floor. "Why?" I asked. "Store policy," the girl replied. "I think it's because of the pockets." Strange: jackets are far from the only garments with pockets sold in Topshop. I presume she meant customers might try to steal items by shoving them in a jacket pocket. I ended up not trying the jacket on at all: I hate trying stuff on in front of an audience. How many sales has Sir Philip Green lost in this way? That's one less embossed beach towel for the yacht.
