IN 1999 Nigel Dempster dedicated a piece in his Daily Mail column to the death of his Pekingese, Tulip.

"My wife Camilla delivered him 14 years and six months ago and he has been a total joy to us over the years, unwrapping and playing with used squash balls thoughtfully provided by the RAC professional Greg Pearman," wrote the late diarist. "So a sense of bereavement pervades us all."
