JIM NICOL, the Canadian chief executive brought in to shake up the formerly sprawling Tomkins conglomerate after the high-profile departure of its architect Greg Hutchings, was patting himself on the back today after delivering a significant increase in profits and dividends.

"This is the year in which the work we have put in over the last three years has started to deliver improved results for Tomkins," said the Pounds 2.5 million-a-year boss.
