Diageo Disappoints but Plans Boost for Thalidomide Payouts

DIAGEO, whose former Distillers subsidiary sold the disastrous Thalidomide drug to pregnant women in the 1950s and early 60s, is increasing its compensation to parents and carers and now expects to pay out a total of Pounds 150 million in future years, writes Jim Armitage.

Under current talks, annual payments are likely to be increased from Pounds 2.8 million to about Pounds 6.5 million a year to fund the rising costs of caring for the victims of the drug's awful side effects as they advance into their 40s and 50s.
